Featuring narrow arms at the base, curving outward to a broader perimeter, the iron cross, or “cross pattee” first appears in medieval art; a 7th century example of which is the treasure binding given to Monza Cathedral by Queen Theodelinda (circa 600’s). The Knight’s Templar began using this design (red in color, on white robes) during the Crusades, as did the Teutonic Knights (plain black cross on white).
