ANTIQUE LATE GEORGIAN 14k SOLID GOLD and SILVER EMERALD ROSE-CUT DIAMOND NECKLACE 1820’s 1830’s I am offering a beautiful antique late Georgian 14k gold and silver cannetille necklace set with natural emeralds and rose-cut diamonds.The necklace is 18-1/2 inches long. It weighs 11.55 grams.The center section of the necklace is 14k solid yellow gold, topped with silver. The cannetille metal-work consists of thin solid gold sheet metal worked in repousse, over twisted solid gold wire.There are no cast metal parts.The diamond-set sliver top is extensively hand-tooled.It is ornamented with three diamond-set flowers, in high relief, and features hinged, articulated ends.The principle stones are three pear-shaped emeralds in open-backed yellow gold settings.One of the emeralds is set as a hinged, movable, drop.The color-matched emeralds are a beautiful saturated green and have natural inclusions.Together, the 3 emeralds weigh about 2 carats.I used 2 different on-line carat calculators to arrive at this estimate (0.72 – 0.73 carats each).I can only make a rough estimate as they are very old, non-standard, pear-cut stones.The necklace is also set with 36 small rose-cut diamonds.They are all set in silver, and for the most-part, in open-backed settings.The open-backed settings allow more light into the stones. This, along with the colored stones, leads me to think that this was originally conceived as a “day-time” necklace (please see photos).Open-backed settings were introduced in France in the 1780’s and are a rarity in Georgian jewelry.28 of the 36 diamonds are set in open backed settings. The other 8 diamonds, in closed settings, are inthe centers of the flowers (3), on top of the hinges (3) and at the ends where the yellow gold chains are attached (2).The rose-cut diamonds all have irregular shapes and faceting that is typical of Georgian jewelry.The tops of all of the diamonds have 3 top-facets. The flat bottoms of the rose-cut diamonds can be seen from the back of the open settings.The technology of the period did not allow for the precise cutting of gemstones.The historic sources for the gemstones of this period, used in this necklace, would have been Columbia or Brazil for the emeralds and Brazil or India for the diamonds. The delicate yellow-gold necklace chain is made up of alternating round and oblong links.Both end-rings of the necklace chain are marked “14k” along with a very tiny, “shield” hallmark.It is an assay office import hallmark. It is plainly a European coat-of-arms, but I cannot identify the country or city that it is from. It may possibly be a Dutch hallmark.The coat-of-arms consists of a shield with symmetrical internal marks and a pointed bottom with a crenelated top edge. It is very hard to make out even with a 40x jewelers loupe.The back of the necklace center section is also marked “14k”, and with the same tiny assay office hallmark (please see photos).These hallmarks were stamped on to the necklace when it had to be assayed to pay an import duty.The necklace has a hand-made jump spring clasp. It is marked “14k” on the connecting ring. It is pinched-on to the end of the necklace chain. The “14k” mark on the jump spring clasp looks different from the others. I believe it to be a replacement for an earlier clasp or hook.I believe the necklace to be from the 1820’s or 1830’s (Georgian period 1714-1837).I believe that it was made in Britain. The design, with the hinged, articulated ends and drop, is very unusual. I have not seen another Georgian necklace quite like this.It is a romantic piece of jewelry.It looks like something that a Jane Austen character might have worn.
